Loving and Hating Exercise
I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and went to school at Ashland University (Amish country, Ohio—honestly there was a horse-and-buggy hookup at the local Walmart) where I ran cross country and track all four years. My favorite event on the track was the 10k (6.2 miles, or around 25 laps) but my heart really belonged to the muddy trails of cross country.
My favorite exercise continues to be running. Since I’ve slowed down over the years I’ve had to move to longer (slower) races. I’ve run three marathons since living in Florida (Chicago, Disney and Boston), and each time I swear I’ll never do that again. . . but after a few months I seem to forget how painful it was.
Like many people, I have a love/hate relationship with exercise. When my alarm goes off in the morning, the LAST thing I want to do is get out of bed, put on my stinky shoes and go run. But everyone knows that wonderful feeling you get after you do something good for yourself-- something that you didn’t want to do, but knew you should.
Once it’s over, that’s when we love exercise.
Of all the lame-o running quotes out there, my favorite (and could apply to any exercise) is this:
Running is like banging your head into a wall—it feels good once you stop.
So go bang your head into the wall for 30-60 minutes and enjoy the rush when it’s over.
